How to Get Rid of Frown Lines Between Eyebrows

There comes a time in everyone's life when you look in the mirror and realise that those frown lines that used to just appear when you raised your eyebrows or frowned have somehow become permanent.

For most of us, these frown lines aren't particularly welcome, but is there anything you can do to get rid of them?

Well, short of going under the knife or turning to some well-administered Botox, eradicating these lines completely is impossible, but there are things you can do to lessen their appearance, says celebrity facialist Michaella Bolder.

How to reduce the appearance of frown lines

Massage techniques are one option – try these exercises three times a week just before bed, for example when applying facial oil. "Apply deep, firm pressure using your fingertips – working outwards from the centre to the temples, and pressing firmly against the muscle fibres," says Michaella. "Use both hands and work outwards eight times."

Another technique Michaella advises is to "run your fingers up and down from the centre of the forehead and back out to the temple, using heavy, fast movements with plenty of friction to get a nice pink colour in the skin".

According to Michaella, both these movements will get blood circulation flowing, activate muscle tissues and relieve tensions around the eyebrow, reducing the appearance of lines.

Keeping the skin well-hydrated will also reduce the appearance of lines – do this by drinking plenty of water and applying moisturising creams. Hyaluronic acid is one good ingredient to look out for, as these clever molecules can hold up to a thousand times their own weight in water.

Another ingredient Michaella advises you look out for when choosing products is retinol. "Add a retinol serum into your skincare routine – the vitamin A will increase the appearance of firmness in the skin and diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles." If you do wear a retinol serum, don't forget to wear an SPF as well, in order to protect your skin from the sun.

There are also some treatments designed to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, such as skin needling, which kickstarts the skin into its natural healing process, refreshing collagen supplies. Some salons, such as Sorbet in London's Crouch End, also offer specific facials targeting lines in the forehead – Sorbet's 'The Frown' facial involves sound waves and an electric current being passed through forehead skin, in order to increase the absorption of restorative serums.

How to prevent frown lines

Of course, prevention is better than cure, and beating frown lines before they really take hold is worth doing.

A good skincare regime and wearing sun protection with both UVB and UVA shields every day will stand you in good stead.

Beauty expert and STRIPPD ambassador Karen Cummings-Palmer says reducing inflammation is also key.

"Ageing is essentially inflammation, so one of the most effective things you can do is to combat this by sleeping well, and avoiding refined sugar (which appears in white bread, pasta and rice, as well as sweets and cakes) in favour of complex carbohydrates like sweet potato, quinoa and brown rice," says Karen.

"I also recommend taking beauty supplements to help you get the essential nutrients for your skin'" says Karen.
